Multiepoch Sky Surveys and the Lifetime of Quasars

چکیده
We present a new method to measure the episodic lifetime of quasars with current and future large-scale sky surveys. Future photometric observations of large samples of confirmed quasars can provide a direct measurement (or interesting lower limit) to the lifetime of an individual episode of quasar activity (tQ) and potentially enable the study of post-quasar host galaxies. Photometric observations of the quasars found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and 2dF Survey could, with a time baseline of ten years, determine tQ to within a factor of two if tQ < 105 years, or set a lower limit to the quasar lifetime. Multiple-epoch, precise photometry with the proposed Large Synoptic Survey Telescope could test more complex models for quasar variability and mean quasar luminosity evolution. These observations could also constrain the rate that tidal disruptions of single stars produce quasar luminosities. It is possible to reverse the order of this investigation; previous-epoch plate material, such as the Digitized Sky Survey, can be used to determine if any of the SDSS quasars had not yet turned on at the time of these prior observations. Measurements of the entire SDSS quasar sample over the ∼ 50 year baseline provided by these plates can potentially be used to estimate tQ to within a factor of two if tQ < 105.5 years, provided quasar variability can be accurately characterized and the detection efficiency and photometric calibration of the plate material can be well determined. These measurements of tQ will have comparable quality to existing, more indirect estimates of the quasar lifetime. Analysis of the 3814 quasars in the SDSS Early Data Release finds that tQ must be larger than approximately 20,000 years. Subject headings: surveys – galaxies: active – quasars: general

The Optical and Near-Infrared Properties of 2837 Quasars in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)
The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in Y JHK imaging, to K = 18.2 (5σ, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues pr...
متن کاملConstraining the Lifetime of Quasars from Their Spatial Clustering
The lifetime of the luminous phase of quasars is constrained by current observations to be 10 ∼< tQ ∼< 10 years, but is otherwise unkown. We model the quasar luminosity function in detail in the optical and X–ray bands using the Press–Schechter formalism, and show that the expected clustering of quasars depends strongly on their assumed lifetime tQ. We quantify this dependence, and find that ex...

Quasars at z > 4 provide direct information on the first massive structures to form in the Universe. Recent ground-based optical surveys (e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey) have discovered large numbers of high-redshift quasars, increasing the number of known quasars at z > 4 to ≈ 500. Most of these quasars are suitable for follow-up X-ray studies. Here we review X-ray studies of the highest r...
متن کاملThe UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey ZY JHK Photometric System: Passbands and Synthetic Colours
The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey is a set of five surveys of complementary combinations of area, depth, and Galactic latitude, which began in 2005 May. The surveys use the UKIRT Wide Field Camera (WFCAM), which has a solid angle of 0.21deg. Here we introduce and characterise the ZY JHK photometric system of the camera, which covers the wavelength range 0.83 − 2.37μm. We synthesise response fu...

Context. For the first time spectroscopic galaxy redshift surveys are reaching the scales where galaxies can be studied together with the nearest quasars. This gives an opportunity to study the dependence between the activity of a quasar and its environment in a more extensive way than before. Aims. We study the spatial distribution of galaxies and groups of galaxies in the environments of low ...
